No matter how good and responsible each family member is, the family meets some changes that bring about problems.
Natural Calamity. Floods, typhoons, earthquakes, and fire are examples of natural calamities that can cause loses of lives and properties. When such natural calamities occur, the family must gather what is left and start a new life. The family must undertaken immediate steps to adjust to the crisis and for the future.
Family Illness. When a family member gets ill, he or she should be placed in a room that is free from noise and well-ventilated. Whenever needed, beddings should be changed. As prescribed by his or her doctor, the right kind of food, the right medicine in the right amount at the right time should be administered to the sick. A sponge bath should be given to the sick as often as the doctor prescribes.
Change in Residence. Instability results when a family moves to another place. The family has to build new relationships with its new neighbors. Family solidarity weakens and is put to a test when a family member goes to work overseas or in distant place.
Loss of Economic Support. When the father or the breadwinner leaves the family or abandons it, or when he dies, the supply of basic needs such as food, clothing, and shelter is affected. The children’s education is likewise affected. The mother and the oldest sibling become the breadwinner and “father”.
Overstaying of Unexpected Visitors. The value of hospitality if put to a test when a family experiences unexpected visitors, particularly relatives, in house.
Death in the Family. The death of a father calls for personal adjustment on the widow’s part and vice versa. The death of both parents calls for adjustments on the children’s parts. They are now faced with financial problems on how to support themselves, not only financially but socially, emotionally, and physically. Since death is inevitable, and often comes when least expected, each family should face it bravely.
